Artist Point is the last destination on the Mt. Baker Highway. The hike to the top isn’t long and there are views of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan for most of it. If you’re going to check it out, I’d recommend going in October. The mountains come to life with deep reds, rich oranges and vibrant blues. I’ve been wanting to head back for a while and didn’t want to risk being rained out in October so I decided to make the most of a sunny (and smoky) September Saturday.
On the way out, Jess and I stopped at Nooksack Falls. Nooksack Falls is part of the North Fork Nooksak River. Further downriver it joins with the Middle and South Fork to create the Nooksack Proper before eventually flowing into the ocean in Bellingham. The view of the falls is a short walk from the parking lot and easy to access if you’re able to make your way over the roots and boulders.
After meandering the trails near the falls, we hopped back in the car and drove another half an hour along the highway, zigzagging our way up to Artist Point. The trailhead was busy – I counted three weddings and there were probably more we didn’t see. There was also a duo playing Country Roads on a guitar and drum and they played it well! We made our way up Artist’s Ridge to Huntoon Point. Turns out the views on the whole way up far exceeded the view at the very top LOL. Either way, I loved every minute of this hike. Artist Point’s view of the massive Mount Shuksan is unparalleled.
A few things: First, I want to give a MASSIVE shoutout to Jess for being such an adventurous friend and for being down to be in so many photos! You’re amazing! Secondly, this is my first personal blog and I’m excited to do more of these. I love getting outside on hikes and adventures with my friends and family and I usually bring along a camera. Send me a message if there’s a specific local spot you want me to feature on the blog!
